Thanks so much everyone for sharing/participating in our #SpotTheKelawar Challenge in celebration of #BatWeek2021!! We hope you enjoyed learning about the cultural symbolism of bats in #Malaysia and #Singapore, and hopefully you’ll start noticing more and more bat motifs all around us! 🦇

And finally, to wrap up #BatWeek2021, we’re incredibly excited to announce the ‘Incredible Bat Tales from the Asia-Pacific’ map designed exclusively by Rohan Chakravarty of @green_humour for #ProjectPteropus!

Our final #SpotTheKelawar post: Can you spot the ‘siku keluang’ motif in the batik design of these #HariRaya money packets? This colourful bat motif is part of an intricate embroidered artwork on display at the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, #Penang.

This particular bat motif spotted at the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery Columbarium in Bishan, #Singapore really caught our attention: its head resembles a fruit bat instead of the typical insectivorous bat, and its long, outstretched wings remind us of a flying fox in flight! Although flying foxes are only occasionally sighted in Singapore today, they used to be more common there before they were locally extirpated, even roosting regularly in the Botanic Gardens, So we can’t help but wonder where the craftsman for this bat drew his/her inspiration from!

Did you know the town of #Kluang in #Johor is actually named for the Large/Malayan Flying Fox, Pteropus vampyrus??? The town’s name comes from the Malay word for flying foxes: ‘keluang’. This place was once home to a sizeable colony of these flying foxes, which is something we know from historical records - but the bats have long since disappeared due to hunting, and now only their name remains.
